Turning Dreams into Reality: Our 2,500-Mile Family Road Trip Adventure

Welcome sign

When we have a dream we’re ready to achieve, both financially and practically, something magical happens: we begin grounding it. That’s the moment when a dream starts transforming into a clear, tangible goal.

And then comes my favorite part – the puzzle. There’s something about piecing together all the elements of 'how to make it happen' that lights me up. I imagine laying out all the pieces of the dream, sorting them into three categories: what works in our favor, what holds us back, and what we don’t know yet.

The process is simple: I start by tackling the unknowns, addressing what we don’t yet fully understand. Then I move on to the things that are holding us back – the challenges that need solving. And finally, I use everything working in our favor to begin slotting the pieces into place. Slowly but surely, the picture becomes clearer, and the dream starts taking shape.

We knew, without a doubt, that we wanted to go on this crazy family road trip the moment we arrived in the U.S. In fact, we started talking about it as if it were already happening, even though we had no set plans. We didn’t know when, but we knew it would be sometime within the next six months – the duration of our visa in the States.

There were a few certain points on the map that we felt drawn to. Visiting family in Chicago was a must, and we couldn’t pass up the chance to see Niagara Falls. Little by little, more places and people started to make their way onto our list: friends we wanted to reconnect with, professional events I hoped to attend, and of course, destinations that called to our sense of adventure.

With the goal in mind, it was time to face the challenges – coordinating dates, the logistics of long drives, managing costs, dealing with peak season prices, and figuring out how this trip would work with my existing schedule. Slowly, each challenge was met, one by one, and the dream began falling into place.

And now, here we are, the five of us – on the road, packed into one car, cruising through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and even a little detour into Canada. In total, we drove about 2,500 miles, half of which were spent staying with family and friends, while the other half saw us checking into hotels and inns.
